THEME: Work

According to Edward W. Younkins, the executive director of the Institute for the Study of Capitalism and Morality, “Work is at the root of a meaningful life, it is the path to individual independence, and it is a necessity for human survival and flourishing. It is also the way in which men realize their identity as rational, goal-oriented beings.”

Does life only have meaning when work is at its center? Is it the guarantor of human flourishing? And is our identity still closely linked to the idea of work?

Undoubtedly, work has been a human practice since the beginning of civilization. We consider work as a virtue and simultaneously as a necessity. It's a centerpiece of the system we live in and it's a way of life. We tend to accept work as something natural and inevitable. But why do we work so hard and for so long? We spend a large part of our lives dedicated to a craft, do we do it for ambition or sustenance? What motivates us?

In the book The Problem with Work, Kathi Weeks proposes a post-work society that will allow people to be productive and creative rather than being relentlessly tied to an employment relationship. What could this new way of life be like? What can it mean to work in a post-capitalist society? What will be the role of knowledge and information in this new society?

Can art have a place in the re-imagining of what it might be and mean to work in the future?

When you work wiht passion or with a sense of mission, isn´t work anymore ?

The challenge of this residence is to think about this theme based on the neighborhood of Marvila.

In the 19th century, Marvila was known for its street markets, fed by the horticultural production of resident farms, mostly from northern owners, new habits and customs arrived in Lisbon such as the Feira da Espiga.

Later it became an urban and manufacturing area, where wines and the ancestral art of cooperage stood out.

Marvila was also a manufacturing district, with special emphasis on the metal industry.

Abel Pereira da Fonseca said: “As long as the Tagus has water, Lisbon should never lack wine”…
